Vernice Sprague, age 98, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday October 30, 2019. She was born to Clarence and Winnifred Scales on January 28, 1921, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Vernice was a graduate of Soo High School in Sault Ste. Marie. She retired from U.S. Civil Service after 32 years. The last 17 years was with the U.S. Customs in their accounting department at the international bridge. Her previous employment was in the Registrar’s office of Lake Superior State University for a year and for 5 years as accounts receivable manager at the local Chevrolet dealer in Sault Ste. Marie. After moving to Grand Rapids in 1985, she continued to be active in various church activities at Kentwood Community Church. In recent years she was a regular attendant at Calvary Church and she was involved in the Senior Ministry until she could not attend church regularly. Vernice was preceded in death by her loving husband Lester, her parents, 3 sisters Clarice and Doris Scales, Irma (Norman) Graham, brother Herbert and niece Lori. Surviving is her loving daughter, Angela (Kenneth) Kalawart and two granddaughters, Erin (Tyler) Dewey and Lisa Kalawart. Also surviving is one sister Phyllis (Lawrence) Ray of Costa Mesa, CA. Several nieces and nephews also survive along with two great-granddaughters. The family would like to thank Azpira Place of Breton and Spectrum Health Hospice for their care and compassion. The funeral service for Vernice will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2019, at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Kentwood, MI 49508. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service. Friends and family are also cordially invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and refreshments immediately following the service.
