I knew Verlo for close to forty years, as he was my lovely wife Lois's brother-in-law. I would see him about every two years or so in Michigan when we would visit, and we visited he and Ruth about three times when they resided in Wickenburg, Arizona, during the fall-winter-spring. We spent some other quality time together as well. They are all fond memories. Verlo was an interesting character with a slightly rough, gruff exterior, who had a heart of gold. You would never know it, unless you knew him well, but he was a (pre-National anthem kneeling) Oakland, LA, Las Vegas Raiders fan and as a lifetime GM guy, was a big fan of NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, who drove a Toyota. Go figure. When he was living in Arizona, Verlo went head over heels into panning for gold out in the desert wilderness, and believe it or not, he and Ruth did find and refine some. Verlo would always tease Lois and I when he first saw us, and we would give it back and we would all settle down for a great visit. The first time I ever met Verlo, back in 1981, we went out in the middle of the night in a swamp, accompanied by my stepson (his nephew) Steve and his nephew Brian Smith both about 15, and ran his coon dogs for a few hours. We always looked forward to our visits ever after, because Verlo was an authentic American original. He didn't take to any unpatriotic behavior too kindly either. The last time I saw Verlo was for a quick three day visit last August, breaking out of Covid-19 prison. I had just learned on the way up from Texas that I had an aggressive cancer in my right salivary gland (neck). I couldn't have been in a better place for such a visit. We were all relaxed and right at home. The last time I saw him, Verlo was standing next to Ruth, probably not more than 20 or 30 feet from the spot where he drew his last breath. Lois and I will both miss him greatly.
