Obituary

Our beloved father, grandfather & great-grandfather, Thomas R. Wielinga Sr., age 81, of Byron Center passed away peacefully in his home on March 5, 2021 from a courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 19, 1939 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Marylin J. Weilinga, his parents, Martha Bucknell & William Wielinga & his brother, James Wielinga.  He enjoyed golf, bowling, spending time with his family, watching the Lions (hoping for a miracle they would win a Super Bowl) and Michigan football.

Tom served in the National Guard Reserves and retired from Steelcase after 30 years. He will be remembered by his humor and quick wit.  He loved his family and we all know he will be watching over us. He will be dearly missed by his family & friends.  Everyone that knew him, loved him!

He is survived by his sister, Kathy Quinn; his children, Thomas Weilinga Jr., Tammy (John) Poppe and Tonja (Dan) Lanting/Dehaan. He is also be survived by many grandchildren & great—grandchildren; close friend, Bonnie Mapes and caretaker/great friend Mark Hiler.

A Memorial Service will be held at Ofield Funeral Home on Friday March 12 at 12pm (visitation will begin at 11am prior to the service).   Due to Covid, there is limited capacity for the service, but all are welcome to come and join us for the visitation prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to “Make a Wish Foundation”

Tommy Jr, Tammy and Tonja I'm so sorry to hear of your dads passing. I spent many late nights after the Steelcase bowling league at the Comet having some after bowling drinks with your mom and dad. He was always good with a story or some laughs. I'm sure he will be remembered fondly by all that knew him.
