Obituary for Judson Patrick Davis

Judson Patrick (Pat or J. Pat) Davis, 74, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away April 11, 2020 due to complications following lung surgery. J. Pat was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 17, 1945 to Judson and Marion (Fowler) Davis. At the end of WWII his parents settled in Holland, Michigan. During this time J. Pat attended Barbour Hall school in Kalamazoo and St. Francis de Sales. The family moved to Grand Rapids in the early 1950's where Pat attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary and graduated from Creston High School in 1964. During these years, J. Pat made many great friends, of whom he remained in contact with until his death. He enjoyed his regular Tuesday morning breakfasts with his childhood friends Carl, Dave, Fred, Gary, Larry, and Rick. These get-togethers brought him great joy over the years. After graduating from Creston, he chose to follow many of his friends into the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and later joined the Marine Corps Reserves.

While he continued his time with the Marine Corps Reserves, J. Pat also took classes at Davenport College and Ferris State University, worked at Lincoln School in Grand Rapids, and in 1979 he married the love of his life, Kara Myaard. J. Pat worked as the purchasing agent for his father's business, Davis, Inc. from the 1970’s through the early 1990’s. He later forged out on his own and operated a private trucking company, Blue Jay Way, until his retirement. J. Pat was a loyal and outspoken American and firearm enthusiast who truly loved his country and his family. He was also the best of big brothers to his four younger siblings.

Pat was blessed with children, Carla VanValkenburg of Grand Lake, CO, Sara (James) Lewis of Cedar Springs, Aaron (Peichi) Davis of Tainan City, Taiwan, and son-in-law Steven VanValkenburg of Grand Rapids, as well as grandchildren Brooke and Lauren VanValkenburg, Julian and Alana Lewis, and Leona Davis. They will all miss his presence as will his siblings, Judith Davis Schildroth of Grand Rapids, Francesca (Raymond) Kisor of Grand Rapids, Christopher R. Davis of Newaygo, and sister in-law Nancy Tuuk (Geoffrey) Davis of Grand Rapids. Uncle Pat will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Dr. Genevieve Schildroth, Sgt. Jed (Jenny) Schildroth, Patricia (Frank) Melchert and all the little Melcherts, Frankie, Allison and Johnny, Will and Sophie Davis, John VerWey (Dea Schafer) and his many cousins the Kendalls and McNiffs. He will also be greatly missed by his dear friend Tim (Shanannigans) Shannahan who shared many memorable lunches with Pat at Trini's, his long-time pal and CPA Bill Wheeler, brother-in-law James (Inna) Myaard, sister-in-law Mara McLaughlin, and many other friends and extended family members.

J. Pat was preceded in death by his parents Judson and Marion Davis, brother Geoffrey Davis, grandparents Maurice and Martha Davis, grandmother Francis Riordan Fowler, Aunt Betty and Uncle Oscar Kendall, cousin Nancy McNiff Morgenstern, much admired cousin Captain Jack MacKercher, USN., brother-in-law, Mark Myaard, and life-long best friend, Bob Smith.
