On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, Mrs. Elaine J. “Parky” Shaw joined the celestial ranks of the Michigan Wolverines after a long and valiant struggle with dementia. Parky was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 19, 1927, and had been a lifelong resident of the area. She was a University of Michigan graduate, earning a Bachelor’s of Music, and has ever since been a U of M fanatic-- from her car, to her home, and her clothing too.

She has achieved many musical accomplishments-- she was the conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphette for 25 years, was in the Calder Band for many years, and received the first annual Interlochen Alumni Band Award in 1991. Parky loved the Interlochen Fine Arts Camp-- she was a student, teacher, and promoter. The Interlochen Camp community was very dear to her.

Parky is survived by her children, Wayne Parker Shaw and Karen Jo Bouwman; grandson Alan Bouwman; brothers John (Kris) and James (Cheryl) Parker; and very special friends, Kim Hall, Kelly Dawson, and Carol Boulgarella. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank W. Shaw; gram Ella Parker Hayman; father H. Wayne Parker; step-mother Marjorie Parker Thompson; and step-brother Thomas Parker.

Come and celebrate her life by wearing maize and blue and sharing a memory, song, poem, etc., at a service of celebration, officiated by the Rev. Ruth McCarty, at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Kentwood, MI 49508. Immediately following the service, you are cordially invited to join family and friends for a time of fellowship and refreshments. There will also be a one hour visitation prior to the service.

Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to Park Congregational Church, UCC, 10 E. Park Place NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503; or to the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 199, Interlochen, MI 49643. Parky will be laid to rest next to her late husband Frank at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. GO BLUE!
