Obituary

Connie Beth Alfes, 52, passed away in the comfort of her own home on January 4, 2021, with her loving husband by her side. Connie was raised in Waterford, Michigan.

Connie was preceded in death by her father, John Alfes.

Connie is survived by her Husband Dan Kaukl; Mother, Mary Alfes; Siblings John (Celeste), Mark (Staci), and Teresa, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Connie graduated from Central Michigan University and could often be heard chanting “Fire Up Chips!” when speaking of her college years. Connie launched right into her successful radio career following college, where she paved the way for women in radio. Connie’s bold yet playful personality allowed her to rise to the top in a male dominated field. Connie was a cheerleader for all whose lives she touched, both in her work and personal life, with a genuine desire to see everyone around her succeed. Connie was intentional in lifting others up and leaving them better than she found them.

Connie had the gift of fun and could make even the most mundane of tasks an adventure. Her infectious laugh could always be heard rooms away and even led to the installation of additional sound barriers in one of her radio studios. The snort that was often woven into her laughter is one that will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Connie’s love for water began when she was a little girl, growing up by Loon Lake. This love continued into adulthood with many of her days being spent at her pool. Connie described her pool as her “happy place”. She hosted many get-togethers there and great memories were made by all. Connie enjoyed all four seasons to their fullest looking forward to the apple orchards in the fall and first snowfall in the winter. Connie was able to watch several incredible snowfalls this year, commenting that the flakes were so big it looked like a snow globe outside. Connie really soaked up each special moment.

For all who have had the privilege of loving Connie, our lives are better for it. May her spirit continue to encourage us all to be good to one another and always remember to laugh.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Dan, Mary and family. She was greatly loved by all of Grand Rapids and her Wisconsin followers as well. I had a small connection with her when her father and my father passed away in the same timeframe at the same age. Fly high Connie, and may you all have peace and comfort at this time.
